What do orthopedic specialists say about barefoot shoes?

Episode von Der SOLE RUNNER® Barfußschuh Podcast von Thorsten Ludwig · 11. Juni 2026 · 5 min

As barefoot shoes are moving more and more into the mainstream, I wanted to take a closer look at what orthopedic specialists actually say about them.

Many orthopedists emphasize that barefoot shoes can support the natural movement of the foot. Unlike conventional shoes, which often have stiff soles, raised heels, and narrow toe boxes, barefoot shoes allow the foot to move more freely. This can help activate and strengthen the muscles in the feet.

Many orthopedic specialists also see barefoot shoes as a way to help prevent foot problems. Because minimalist shoes restrict the foot less, they can support a more natural posture and a healthier gait pattern. This may help reduce the risk of problems such as hallux valgus or flat feet, also known as fallen arches.
