043 - How a skate legend ends up on a dirt jump bike with 61 - with Steve Caballero
Episode von MOVEMENT - Branding for the bike industry von ADLIPS Branding Studio · 30. September 2026 · 1 h 25 min
Steve Caballero turned pro as a skateboarder in 1980, one year before the first mass produced mountain bike ever reached a shop floor. He turns 62 in November and he is still riding. Still skating, still on the dirt bike, and these days mostly on his dirt jumper. In this episode Tim sits down with a man who has been a public figure for four and a half decades and has spent almost all of it with the same two sponsors.
For Tim this conversation was personal. His parents ran skate shops in the 80s & 90s, so he grew up with the name Caballero on the wall of his room and later played Steve as a character on his PlayStation. Talking to him more than thirty years later closes a circle that started long before ADLIPS ever existed.
The heart of the episode is a story every brand person should hear. Steve has been riding for Powell Peralta since 1979 and for Vans since 1988, and his first signature shoe came out in 1989. The Half Cab, still one of the best selling skate shoes in the world, was never designed in a studio. Skaters cut the original high top down themselves and taped it back together, Steve followed their lead, and Vans listened. What the industry now calls community co creation happened here decades before anyone had a word for it.
We also talk about the path that brought him to bikes. BMX first, then skateboarding, then dirt bikes, then mountain biking and dirt jumping. What connects all of it for him is not the sport but the feeling of overcoming a fear. He explains why he believes natural talent does not exist, why right now is the best time in history to be an athlete, why he almost quit his sponsor four times and stayed anyway, and what brands can learn from a culture that has been building community for fifty years.
It is a conversation about loyalty, resilience and passing knowledge on. And it ends with the question on how to stay happy and relevant for so many years - the answer might surprise you...
