Nach dem Ende von Led Zeppelin geht Robert Plant viele andere Wege. Schon in den 80er Jahren veröffentlicht er sowohl Alben mit Klassikern, neu interpretiert mit Freunden, als auch neue Lieder auf einer Reihe von Alben. Die Klänge sind leichter, poppiger. Robert Plant weitet seinen musikalischen Horizont ständig. 1993 erreicht mit „Fate of Nation“ sein Schaffen einen Höhepunkt, erstmals geht er auch wieder auf Tournee.

Jimmy Page versucht, mit The Firm, einer neu formierten Band um ihn und den Sänger Paul Rodgers, mit dem Powerrock der 80er Jahre mitzuhalten. Nach zwei Alben ist aber damit Schluss.

In den 90er Jahren arbeiten Page und Plant überraschend wieder zusammen. Angestiftet von dem Erfolg der „unplugged“-Welle nehmen sie ein opulentes Album (No Quarter, 1994) mit Led Zeppelin-Klassikern und zwei Orchestern auf, einem westlichen und einem östlichen. Eine Welttournee schließt sich an. Die Hoffnung der Fans erfüllt sich offenbar: die beide kündigen anschließend neues Material an.
